Sunrise Safari- May 10 pics, Commentary and Video

Sunrise Safari- May 10, 2016

This morning we have as our guides and on Camera -
James and Bryan
Sam and Jeandre
Jamie on a bush walk and Dave on camera and Stefan as security lookout.

We start with Sam and we see in the dim morning a few zebra.

Over to Sam who is carefully creeping around the area where Karula had her kill high up in a tree. The remains of the Male Impala is still located in the tree on the branch.
Sam doesn't think Karula is with her kill and perhaps has moved off.

THERE SHE IS!!  She was right here the entire time just laying down on the grass close to the tree where her kill is located.

Great work Jeandre! He located Karula as Sam was driving slowly past.

James is coming into the area as he is very good at spotting the cubs.

James is on a mission to spot the cubs
Sam will be moving out of the Karula sighting as he is driving "Rusty" and the camera he has on his vehicle is better suited for Cheetah Plains.  James will be moving into position.

James is showing us a pic that he took on our previous drive. He stayed for an additional hour after we went offline and he managed to spot those gorgeous little eyes of one of the cubs so he took a picture with his camera to share with us.

If you look very very closely you will see 2 tiny eyes peeking out.

Distinct Suckle Marks

James sees an Impala not to far from Karula and said that he (Impala) is completely clueless and doesn't see this cousin hanging dead up in the tree.

Over to Jamie who is giving us a tour of Final Control where it all happens

Sam has located another awesome Spider

Over to James who is using his Binoculars to locate our little ones.

Where Are Those little Leopard Cubs Hiding

James is going to turn around and go back to where Karula is stretched out. She might call the cubs out.

While James turns around we will pop back over to Jamie

We see Red Grasses Gleaming in the sunlight

We also get a great view of a funnel Web. Incredible!

Funnel Web

 Jamie spots some harvester termites.

Harvester Termites

Harvester Termites

These harvester termites are not the termites that build the enormous mounds found in this area. These Termites live under bark of branches and will have to take cover soon as the sun warms up.

Back over to James with a few Steenbok

Karula is up and moving away from the area.

As per most animals when James is there, Karula follows suit and does something quite "Unroyal " as James puts it.  Check out the video.

Sam always remembers Yellow Billed Horn bills because he says its beak reminds him of a banana. He learned that during his training.

Over to Jamie who saw a Francolin alarm calling and then barrelling itself through a Thorn Bush

Francolin Hiding In The Buffalo Thorn Bush

Jamie shares a close up view of a buffalo thorn

Buffalo Thorn Branch Showing Straight Thorn and Hooked Thorn

Jamie tell us the story (James has also spoke of this local custom) is that this thorn will carry a soul of a deceased loved one. The hook Thorn captures the Soul and the straight thorn releases it.

Over to Sam with a most multi- coloured bird for us

A few Zebras with Sam

Over to James with a female and Large bull Kudu

We look off into towards the Drakensburg Mountains as James says there was a report this morning that a front was moving in.  James says "piffle".

Over to Jamie who is showing us a branch and how the Elephants ring bark it to get down to the cadmium layer.

There is evidence of a Wood Borer Beetle as well

Jamie continues her bush walk with some balancing on a very old tree branch

Jamie locates Breakfast
White Berry Bush.
She says you eat the white flesh of the berry but not the seed because the seeds make "some people feel funny".

Over to Sam who shows us a Cheetah Track

Over to James with A large Elephant who is in full Musth. This Video below is a MUST WATCH

James calling it "Green Penis Syndrome"

And just before this amazing Elephant moves off down the road he stops to spray up a dust storm for us to see

Elephant creates some Dust

Visitors are more Interested In James and Bryan
James telling us how funny it is when people on guide vehicles stare at James in his little vehicle with a HUGE camera on the back instead of looking at a giant bull Elephant.

James talking about going on as safari and how importantly vital it is to bring a pair of binoculars. Your naked eye is wonderful for the big stuff like Lions and Leopards but for the birds or insects and flowers you really need a set of Binoculars.
And James also suggests a warm coat.

Sam has a type of Dung Beetle to show us

James tells us the story of this amazing Fig Tree. The video tells the story

This  fig tree is uncommon in this area of Djuma. It is living in a dead Leadwood Tree. The seed from inside a fig passed through the gut of perhaps a bird and it's seed lodged inself in the branch of this tree and grew. This tree is perhaps 4 decades old now.

James came across about 20 mongoose and Bryan being most excellent with mimicry duplicated the chirping sound of the mongoose which brought them right close to the vehicle. They were not nervous at all. Very inquisitive and relaxed
