Sunrise Safari- July 24, 2016

Sunrise Safari- July 24, 2016

Starting off this morning with Jamie with Dave on Camera

Update from Jamie-  Massive herd of Buffalo on Arathusa Dam. Shadow was there as well.  Karula appears to be crossing back and forth between Hoffmans and Djuma
Mvula crossed into Djuma last night
Lions are on the boundary east of where we can traverse eating a Buffalo. 2 Males plus all of the females , so there probably isn't much meat left.

Some pretty Impala who are all fluffed up to keep warm this chilly morning.

Jamie provides once again an AMAZING intro for Stefan

 Jamie Does Amazing Intro's.

Stefan has Gerhart assisting him this morning on camera.

Jamie received an update that Karula with both cubs have crossed back into Djuma so Jamie is hoping to locate her.

Update on ages of the cubs:
Karulas 2 cubs were born February 2nd so they are now 5 1/2 months old. 1 Male and 1 Female
Shadow's Cub is approx 4 months old and is female.
Thandi's cubs are a 2-3  weeks old.
Inkanyeni has 1 remaining but which would be about 7 months old.
The oldest set of Lion Cubs are about 10 weeks old.
The youngest set of Lion cubs are about 3 1/2 weeks old.
Their might be a 3rd set of Nkahuma Cubs but we haven't found them yet.

We see a Bachelor herd of Impala and a breeding herd of Zebra.

Over to Stefan. He is enjoying the drive this morning. He said it smells like it might rain.

Stefan enjoys Summer the most because his main interest is insects, butterflies etc. But it changes year to year.

Stefan was on the game drive and told us we are next in line. So while he sorts out administration with this we head over to Jamie

Jamie is hot on the trail of Karula and her cubs which means she and Aubrey knows which way she went.

We are with Stefan and we see one of the Female Nkahuma Lioness's and one of the Birmingham Boys. They are mating but it appears that this is close to coming to an end. Usually lasts 5 days mating every few minutes.  They rarely eat during these days.

This female definitely has suckle marks which begs the question. Does she have cubs? or did she lose her cubs? We do not know. 80% of cubs do not live to 1 year of age.

Panthera says : Just over a century ago, there were more than 200,000 wild Lions living in Africa.
Today, there are only about 20,000.  Lions are now extinct in 26 African Countries.
Mating continues. We get a good view of the suckle marks but they look old.  Could be because it is so dry out but Stefan thinks she most likely has lost her cubs.

Over to Jamie where she answers a very good question about whether people in this area eat Antelope.

 Are Antelope Eaten By People

Rhino's are not shown on Safarilive Nor do any of us post any photos of Rhinos  should we see one. This is an anti-poaching measure and is used to not give a location as to where a Rhino might be.

Over to Stefan with our Lions.

 Successful

Now a short rest.

We are with Jamie and Dave and there appears to be a road block.
Elephants have pushed over a tree onto the road.

From A Tree That An Elephant Has Kindly Pushed over.

No luck with moving the tree so it is turn around time.

Jamie is explaining the latest about her pom pom hat. It went missing. Then was found on the floor of the Mahindra but was in a sad state.
Jamie washed it and now the pom pom no longer looks like a pom pom.
Since she borrowed this hat from Kirsty in Final Control, she is going to ask her if she can cut the pom pom off.

Back over to Stefan with out mating Lions. They both look empty bellied.

We switch over to Jamie with an African Hawk Eagle who is looking quite ruffled in this wind.

 And also a juvenile Bateleur

And there is a Kudu watching us watching the Eagle.

The game drive is very busy as Guides have found a very large Dead Elephant on Buffleshoek. Jamie suggests because of its size, it was most likely natural causes (old age).

Waterbuk

With Stefan and our Lions.  Stefan said a chill has come in and he is looking forward to being back at camp with a hot coffee.

He loves sitting with the Lions while they rest and he has a box of books with him and is truly a book lover.
2 out of 10 cubs will live to Maturity.
The Birmingham Boys are young and strong and the Female Lions should have many more litters.

That it for this Sunrise Safari.
Cya soon for the Sunset Drive

NOTE: Brent is on his way back from Rwanda and will be out guiding us around soon
