We open this afternoon with Brent driving "Maggie" the mahindra which is a longer vehicle in length.
Jeandre is on camera with Brent and they are following a mating pair of Lions.
One of the Birmingham Boys and Amber Eyes.
Jamie starts us off with some Elephants with Bryan Joubert working his magic on camera.
The Elephants are quite nervous this afternoon as it is very windy.
The weather is a cloudy gusty day
Back with Brent as the two Lions are moving into the thicker area near the river bed. They both appear quite hungry. They have been mating for days and rarely hunt during this time so their bellies are very empty.
Over to Jamie who has left the nervous Elephants and is meandering around to see what is out there.
With the wind, many animals hunker down under cover.
Update: It looks like Inkanyeni has lost one of her cubs. She has been seen with only 1 cub but no absolute confirmation yet.
We are now back with Brent who has caught up with the lions.
Amber Eyes is using every opportunity to put the slip on the Birmingham Male.
Birmingham Male And Amber Eyes Nkahuma Female
With Jamie and a few female Kudu well into the brush.
We are back with our resting Lions
Being such a windy day the animals are difficult to find.
The Elephants are even staying in the thicker areas as we are now back with Jamie
With Brent and the Lions and he takes a few minutes to discuss his hair and that he could not find his hat this afternoon in time for drive.
Brent Talks About His Hair
With Jamie as another herd of Elephants have sprinted in to join the other herd.
Elephants Kick Up Some Dust
Back with Brent on this quiet afternoon.
The Male Lion spots a Vulture overhead and watches intently. Perhaps wondering if the Vulture has spotted a kill nearby where he can get a free meal.
Over to Jamie with some Nyala, Impala and Waterbuk.
On these windy cloudy days, the screen shots do not show up well as there is no sun to provide contrast so I have placed a video here instead.
Male Nyala, Impala and Waterbuk
Back over with Brent and these Lions have not moved an inch.
Jamie has spotted some Yellow Billed Hornbills.
They are sitting on top of a termite mound and eating the Termites
Here are our lazy Lions
Brent talks bout how Lions are no longer found in Europe as they used to be quite plentiful.
Lions Used To Live In Greece
Karula was just spotted at the entrance sign to the DRC. (Guides Camp) so Jamie was heading there.
BUT
Over to Jamie who is having vehicle difficulties.
She is driving "Rusty" and it started going ticka ticka ticka ticka and then there was smoke.
She is slowly cruising mostly in neutral back to camp in hopes that it will be fine.
Rusty Is Going Ticka Ticka Ticka
The Wendy vehicle is currently being rewired so it is not available.
Come on Amber Eyes. Wake Up!
We are back with Jamie. Rusty has not made any more weird noises.
She is continuing on. If her vehicle makes more noises then she will return to camp.
James was there and suggested the fan just got caught but seems ok now.
Jamie is going to look for Karula but the Gremlins are attacking today and signal is patchy.
Reports that Karula is heading towards the waterhole.
We are slightly delayed as the Elephants are blocking the way and Jamie has to be slow as to not upset the Ellies.
Karula has finished her drink and has changed direction which is true to form for our Zig Zagging Karula
Karula Jogs Across The Road
Brent has signal again and it is starting to get dark and weather looks ominous and very windy
Both Lions are still snuggled down trying to keep warm
Brent does not have a spotlight on this vehicle but he has positioned himself so he can turn the headlights towards our Lions.
Much better visuals now
Stretching Yawning And Grooming
Brent's camera pack is showing battery dead so he is heading back to camp and says goodbye for this evening.
Jamie is now with the Lions for us.
They are up and moving.
Flehmens Grimace
And now they have flopped down again to rest.
And now night is upon us and we see a gorgeous crescent moon
And this concludes our very quiet Sunset Drive for July 7, 2016
