Sunrise Safari- May 14 We have Cheetahs, Nkahuma Pride, Ellies And Vervet Monkeys

Sunrise Safari- May 14

We have Brent as our guide this morning with Jeandre on Camera and James will be on the other vehicle with Dave on Camera. Louise and Kirsty are in final control.

We begin and it is still quite dark but we spot some impala. They are practicing their sparring skills.

We immediately head over to James who has spotted some female lions.  He isn't sure who they are as he has just came across them.

James says they are stalking something

Definitely the Nkahuma pride as we get a close look at Amber Eyes. All 5 are here. We thought there were 4 but realized there was 2 together and then further away there were 3. One is very pregnant.

Amber Eyes move past his vehicle.
James says "Hello Gorgeous"

Hello Gorgeous
They are on the move. Chasing each other and playing.  They blend so well into the Autumn grass and as the grass becomes more Golden, they will become almost invisible.

James is repositioning to be able to follow them for a bit.

He Stops
"Oh Something Has Died"

Something Has Died

The spinal column is completely intact which makes James this this animal was killed by a Cheetah and not a Leopard or Lion.

They are moving deeper into the vegetation and perhaps over the boundary. James is attempting to get in so for now, let's pop over to see Brent

Brent is Excited- Fresh Leopard Tracks
It is a very cloudy misty morning.

Back over to James. The lions are heading into Simbambili which means we cannot follow them unless they turn and move into Arathusa.

We are on the Simbambili Arathusa Cut line and there are two Hyenas there. The Lions are watching, resting and then heading off

The lions have moved off so James will be heading off into Cheetah Plains

Brent has fresh tracks. Karula has gone South but he sees male leopard tracks.
James was heading back to final control to get a new ear piece so we were with Brent who promptly lost signal so we are back with James.

Eerie Scotch Mist coming over the plains. James is taking a picture. He is sure he will make The National Geographic Cover

Back to Brent as he and Jeandre are heading into the mist.
Oh! A nice little breeding herd of Ellies.

You can notice that their eyes are weaping due to the dust in the dry season.

Brent is trying to get James on the game drive radio. He wants James to head down to where the male Leopard might be before he heads north.

Over to James who has found us a Giraffe.

James is speedily heading to Cheetah Plains now as there were 2 Cheetahs spotted.

Back to Brent. He heard an Elephant Trumpeting aggressively. It is hard to track with Elephant herds around because they obliterate the tracks.

It is a very misty morning. They call it Mist because Fog comes in off of the ocean so that is why this is mist and not fog.

Land based fog is called mist.

We see how misty it is as the Elephants get a drink.

 Over to James
It is completely magical.
There are spider webs everywhere all moistened with the mist.

Back over to Brent as he is surrounded by a huge herd of Elephants. A tiny Baby.

The little one is practising using his trunk and picking up small pieces of dirt. When he cant get his trunk to work, he kneels down and uses his mouth.

Over to James as we come onto Cheetah Plains

While James moves into the Cheetah Sighting we head back over to Brent with the Elephants.

Elephants calm Brent he says because he is somewhat hyperactive.

The Elephants are eating a Round Leaf Teak

Round Leaf Teak

Brent is saying his accident with an Elephant 2 years ago that caused him to have a hip problem was an accident. It wasn't his fault and it wasn't the Elephants fault.

And we are back with James who now has CHEETAH!!

What would James do if a Cheetah jumped into this vehicle

James saying that Cheetahs are much taller then Leopards. They have smaller heads with large nasal cavities which assists them in their ability to be fast.

They have really fat bellies and are obviously well fed.

As more and more vehicles arrive to the sighting it becomes difficult to have a good view.

Getting cut off
The Cheetahs are heading off into Mala Mala now so we will get one last view.

Over to Brent while James attempts to maneuver between the various vehicles.

Brent sees a Warthog who doesn't want to be on camera

Back to James with the Cheetahs but a game drive vehicle has put his vehicle almost right up against the Cheetahs which does not help in getting a decent viewing.

I think parking this close is TOO CLOSE

The driver looked at James ( who appears somewhat perturbed) and the huge camera in the back and quickly moved off and stopped and apologized to James.

Only Male Cheetahs form coalitions. Females do not He has seen reports of 4 in a coalition but they would all have been cub mates.

 Over to Brent
A SLENDER MONGOOSE!!! Very rare to ever get this on camera. Brent is super excited!
