Sunrise Safari - May 21 - Pics,Commentary And Videos! We have The Birmingham Boys!

Sunrise Safari - May 21

We start off this chilly morning with Jamie and Wiam on camera. The goal is to head towards Cheetah Plains

The temp is 17c 62F
We are live from Djuma, Arathusa and Cheetah Plains Game Reserves in the Sabi Sands in the Greater Kruger National Park.

Oh my! An Elephant has created a road block

Ellie Road Block
Over to Brent who has Jeandre with him on camera this morning.

Brent says there is good news and bad news.  The good news is that the lions have made a Buffalo kill. The bad news is that they are currently out of our traversing area.

Background- The Birminham Male lions are our area's main Coalition. There were 5 of them but one recently passed away from having received a punctured lung most likely from a Buffalo. So the Birmingham boys are still 4 strong.

The Nkahuma female lion pride have been on Djuma but have slipped over our boundaries during the night.

The Salala Pride and the Salala breakaways have been around but that was after the Majingalans and then the Matimbas had a spat and they all ran around every which way for a while.

Things have now settled down. The Majingalons have gone back West with the Matimbas heading South. The Salala's and the Breakaway Salalas have also left the area.

The 2 young male lions that we saw on a previous drive possibly were from the breakaway pride and perhaps in all the confusion got left behind.  They might still be stuck in the North or might have headed into Manuleti.

Over to Jamie who has a nice breeding herd of Elephants.

The Elephant using their toenails to scrape away the grass. Lots of browsing and grazing.

Over To Brent who has an update from the game Channel

2 of the Birmingham Boys have filled a Buffalo during the night. The Nkahuma Pride is lying up on the Cheetah Cut line so fingers crossed.

Another Gorgeous Sunrise

Quick over to Brent who has located one of the Birmingham Males and what appears to be the youngest female of the Nkahuma Pride. They are mating and will be together for a few days mating approximately every 15 minutes.

A viewer has asked if Safari Live will be adding any other traversing areas?

Jamie said there is a chance of widening the traversing area. It is very controlled. If you have too many vehicles, it impacts the entire area.
It is a delicate balance and is somewhat Political.

Djuma, Vulatela and Galico Lodges obviously benefit from the live drives as they bring lots of Tourists. (Those lodges can go to all of the areas we travel during our live drives)

We just gained Cheetah Plains which is exceptional. We have seen Jackal, Ostriches and of course Cheetahs.

The more friends you ask to watch Safari live the more they have to play with.

Over to Brent. The Lions can be quite aggressive while mating so he is taking care moving into the drainage line.

Back to Jamie

We see some Waterbuk

Jamie is discussing the guides health coverage because they do travel in many areas. All of the guides have robust medical plans. A Company called "Safety" connected to WildEarth and the guides are very fortunate to have the in depth coverage that they do.

South Africa has some of the best medical care in the World.

A few Impala munching

Xivambalana (male Leopard) is currently on Nkorho in the open area says Jamie

She shows us a Bushmans Poison Grape

Jamie explains that you can crush up the leaves and apply it to bee stings.

Jamie has a discussion where she amazingly explains how animals can and DO predict the weather. He has had personal experience with it. This video below is a must see

We are now over with Brent. He has left the mating lions to their business and will back in with them later. They have heard a lion calling and heading West which is into Djuma (Guarry Pan Road)

A pride is made up of related lion females and their offspring.
A Coalition is made up of male Lions related or not related.

Brent is looking for those Lion tracks. Lex is coming from the other side and is assisting.

Everyone want to meet Lex?

Lex
We see some Kudu with Brent as he tracks these lions

Brent hears Guinea Fowl alarm calling one road over on Hippo Pool Road. He is very excited.

Brent calls it "CATERDAY SATURDAY"

And Brent does it again!! He finds us the Birmingham Male resting in the shade.

I got a great video clip of him contact calling. see link below. Thanks Jeandre for such amazing camera work as usual.

The lion has a limp which could be an injury(looks like a cut) but he is a formidable Lion and will heal quickly

Now 3 of the Birmingham Males are accounted for. The one we saw mating with the young Nakhuma female, Another is over in Torchwood mating with another female and now this male.

He has a very full belly so he will most likely sleep here the remainder of the day. Brent is going to head back to the mating pair and see if they have moved into a more open area.

Jamie has (gremlins) tech issues and has headed back to camp to have it repaired.

Brent comes along a nice breeding herd of Buffs.

And the pic below is quite special as Brent calls it Buffalo Bull Giving him the "YOU OWE ME MONEY STARE"
