Sunrise Safari May 5- Pics, commentary and Video

Sunrise Safari May 5, 2016

James on a perfect morning. A thin sliver of the waning moon in the sky.

We have 3 teams out this morning. James will be our guide along with Bryan, Sam with David on camera and Jamie will be out on a bush walk with Wiam on Camera and Stefan will be security control.

The electricity is not working so all of the staff had to fumble in the dark this morning to get ready for their day.

The current temperature is 13 degrees C which is 59 F. This is the coldest temperature they have had thus far. The sun will soon warm everyone up and should be in the mid 70's by mid day.

We stop to take a few moments with an Impala with James

We hear the first Doves of the morning.... a couple of Francolins  James heard Lions early in the morning off in the distance

The Hippos will be moving further and further from the pans as the vegetation around the waterholes will be all gone due to the drought

Over to Jamie who has some incredibly fresh Buffalo Dung to share with us

Jamie taking us on a Bush Walk

Jamie pointed out the Buffalo Dung and it's importance that it is incredibly fresh because it is so important to be constantly alert and aware of your surroundings.

Stefan provides Security

Stefan continues to be ahead of Jamie and provides security for her. As most of you know, Stefan is the only person who is allowed and registered to carry a rifle in the bush here.

Jamie showing us the various grasses and how ripe they are getting.  ( WINTER IS COMING!)

Now over to Sam.  Oooops. This isn't Sam. This is James

James says ""I am not Sam.""

There have been no tracks of Karula on the Southern Boundary so heading off to see if we can find the Nkahuma Lioness, hopefully still with the kill from earlier.

Monkey Pod Senna
James has found us a Pergamorphic Grasshopper which is quite Toxic

WOW!!! Lion!!! Sitting in the MIDDLE of the Road!

We are with James on this Lion sighting. Close to Cheetah Cut line.

She is up and moving heading in a South Western direction. Bryan Finds them!!

So we have confirmation of 2 female lions. Most likely the Nkahuma's.  One has been off mating with one of the BB and has excluded herself from the prid (most likely temporarily) and one has been hanging out around a drainage line and looks visibly pregnant. So with the 2 that we have here that makes 4.

James said this one has swollen nipples and could be the pregnant one.  They are up and moving again so we are going to hop over to Jamie and see what she has been up to.

And we catch Jamie having breakfast.

The Lioness is munching on old remains of a Kudu.
She is eating and ripping the stomach apart and you can really see the grass contents.

This is not what they lions would normally eat. They usually would pull out the stomach and discard it as the stomach is filled with grassy vegetation and lions eat meat.

James is calling this mixture a lovely olive green.

(For those who are not familiar as to what Haggis is. I have created somewhat of a recipe below for you to enjoy.)

Over to Sam. He has seen some Leopard tracks. Poor Sam has had trouble with "Rusty" (his vehicle) and also had signal problems so he has been back to Final Control 3 times to get it all ironed out.  It doesn't help that they have no Electric power this morning.

Over to James who has found us some Elephants.

Back with James and Giraffes

The young Giraffe is most likely almost weaned now
When you view video clip below you can tell by his chewing of his cud.
He is approximately 2 months old

Check out the Video as there is a Yellow Billed Ox pecker on this young Giraffe and they are hard to locate birds in this area.

Back to James and he has mentioned Sindile. (A young male Leopard who caught a domestic dog . The Dog was shot, killed and tested positive for Rabies. Sindile was taken into Quarantine for vaccinations and monitoring Sept 2015. His status remains unknown.)

Over to James and he finally has found what he has been looking for. A Thorn Bush. Now he can tell us the Thorny Bush and Your Soul Story.

As we near the end of our drive this morning, James tells us that Squeezy Dyson is our NEW CRAB!. well....  We have a new crab hole.  No confirmation as to if there is a crab in it yet. We lost Pinchy Whiner (crab) as a Buffalo laid on the side of the road and destroyed his hole and most likely Pinchy as well.

 That is it for now!
