Sunrise Safari- June05, 2016

Sunrise Safari- June 05, 2016

We start off this morning with James Hendry as our guide and he has Bryan Joubert on camera.

A Lion was calling throughout the night. James thinks he is heading towards Arathusa

We also have Jamie Patterson with Wiam Dornbrack on camera

Over to Jamie and she has been tracking the Lion and he is heading towards either Arathusa which we can traverse onto or Simbambili which we cannot traverse onto.

Jamie heard Elephants trumpeting so she thinks the Elephants have met up with the Lion.
We come across the Elephants and they appear calm

While Jamie talks on the game drive radio, we pop over to James

Once again, a gorgeous sunrise

Ground Hornbills.

Ground Hornbills

It takes 9 years for a Hornbill to breed. They are endangered.

Over to Jamie.
Jamie has heard from the game drive channel that the Lion did not cross over the boundary. She doesn't see tracks but it appears he has vanished.
She has radioed James who has Hubert on his vehicle and James will bring Hubert to where Jamie last saw his tracks and Hubert will do his magic.

We stop to say a quick hello to Taxon
Taxon
Jamie introduces Chelsea who is the new intern and is on the back of the vehicle and this is her first game drive
Chelsea- New Intern

Jamie is talking about the power lines which run through the reserves and that Elephants are sensitive to the sensations from the power lines.

Jamie Got A Power Surge

Popping over to James now.

Over to James who has found nothing. Hubert is on foot.
He is in Arathusa now.
 No more Lion calls.
It happens quite often that the Lions make all sorts of noise all night long and then become quiet in the morning.

News from Simbambili- (I think I already reported this yesterday) that Junior has found a friend. He has teamed up with another male and hopefully the two of them will form their own coalition

Hubert has just called James and said that Lion is inside of the block and he can hear the Lions calling. Same area that we were in before.  James is heading there.

Hubert just called again. He has found the Lion. One Male Lion

So excellent to have Hubert tracking. He is amazing!
Over to Jamie while James gets into the sighting

Jamie saw a Hyena but it has disappeared.

Jamie shows us the Male Lion track

When Junior met his new friend, they had a bit of a spat and Junior stole his new friends kill and then they became friends

Over to James who has the male Lion

James is trying to figure out if this is one of the Birmingham boys or is it Junior. As much as viewers would like to see Junior, it would be dangerous for him to come into this area and dangerous for the new cubs.

This is definitely one of the Birmingham Boys

Herbert tells James that when he found the Lion, it took steps towards Herbert (He clarified his name. James and all of us were calling him Hubert)... yes.. It took steps towards him and then he stopped.

The Birmingham boy sat up. made a short half attempt at a contact call and then flopped back down and has now gone back to sleep.

Over to Jamie who is talking about an Elephant in Musth
Came across a large Elephant who obviously was in Musth so Jamie felt it more appropriate to back away then put Chelsea through it on her first drive.

 Moody Elephant and Orange Drink
With James and we see a young Elephant with a sore foot. Bottom portion looks swollen. Could be as simple as it having a thorn in its foot which is body will heal. His family will take care of him.

 Ellie With A Sore Foot

Over to Jamie. She had moved away from the Elephant and planned on driving on the fire break but he followed them there and he wasn't going to allow her to go through so Jamie has gone all the way around.

White Crowned Helmet Shrike

Not much at Buffleshoek Dam but there is a Grey Heron

Over to James who is going towards Tree House Dam to see what is happening there. The Male Lion is on the move so he will keep an ear open on the game drive channel.

James gets out of the vehicle and shows us a chunk of root

Over  to Jamie with a solitaire Elephant bull who is relaxed and enjoying himself.
Mega wrinkly fellow

Jamie has been watching Lion tracks that look like they are going right into Torchwood.

Great video below but the audio is what you want to hear. Elephant trumpeting, then adult giving the calming growl

Ellie Trumpets And Adults Provides Calm

Over to James where construction work is being done on Twin Dams. Will provide lots more available water once it is done in about a week

James says over to Jamie because she has something interesting for us.
Its worth the few seconds of video

Jamie Has Something Interesting For Us

Over to James with some Impalas but blocky signal so I could not get any pics.

Over to Jamie. James said she has found what was upsetting the Elephants

Jamie sees what the Elephants Were Trumpeting About

A gentle but really large Millipede

Wiam spotted a Dwarf Mongoose and of course their best friend the Hornbills.

Over To James

Waterbuk. James thinks they smell like Roybos tea (spelling?) He isn't fond of it but Bryan quite enjoys it

 Heart Shaped noses

Nice young Elephant Bull

Beautiful day now. James describes the Clouds as Wispy Cotton Wools.
Wispy Cotton Wools Clouds As James Puts It
Over to Jamie. She sees no signs of anything that could have upset the Elephants.
But on a brighter note, She stopped by a guide vehicle from one of the lodges who were having a snack and beverage stop and Jamie says Look What We Got!
Drinks. I got a Juice Box! and Muffins!
Oh NO! Look who showed up!

Jamie gives us a demonstration regarding Brent Leo Smith's concept of size.

Jamie says goodbye and we pop over for a last moment with James who is with the herd of Elephants that Jamie was with earlier

And as the Elephants move on, so must we.

Thats it for this Sunrise Safari
Cya all soon.
