Sunrise Safari- June 17, 2016

Sunrise Safari - June 17

Good Morning everyone.
We start off with a tech difficulty screen

Now its up and we have Brent
We joined him mid sentence.. something about the Hyena Den.

It is an overcast and windy day.

Yes. Brent just said there are 2 Hyenas around here with their tails up so they must be on to something.

James is in the tent and has Dave on camera with him.
It is chilly but James gets some warmth from the lights.

James is showing us the Hyena Skull
and is explaining how the jaw works.

Over to Stefan with Jeandre on camera.  He is going to walk around close to Cheetah Cut line.

He shows us a Zebra Wood. It is one of the hardest trees out here.
He tries to move it with all of his strength and it will not move at all.

Stefan Tries To Move The Heavy Zebra Wood

Over to James who is out in the open area looking for the Hyenas. James said they were knocking about for the last few minutes but now they are gone.

James is back out of the tent and looking for the Hyenas

Over to Brent.

We know that Karula has brought her cubs back into Djuma so Taxon(Guide at Djuma) will be looking from the West and Brent will be looking from the East in hopes of locating her.

Brent is driving along and we have a Buffalo roadblock

Over to James who now sees the Hyenas not far from the tent.

James sees the Hyenas

They continue to walk and disappear into the bushes

Over to Stefan now

Stefan is inspecting all of the bushes and flower heads looking for the creepy crawlies.

Stefan shows us a very interesting way to catch a rabbit.

With Stefan Winterboer

 Over to Brent

Brent is close to the Southern Edge of Djuma and he is hoping Taxon does find tracks.
Let's hope Karula has not done a disappearing act that she tends to do.

Update on Sindile- He has moved a massive distance of  over 20 km in the last 24 hours. And is near a lodge called "honey guide" in Mala Mala.

Brent tells us his Story entitled "My Guide was Eaten By A Lion"

Over to Stefan as Brent says Stefan has something that isn't nearly as scary as a Lion

Stefan lifts a log and shows us a Wood Louse
And then immediately back to Brent as Stefan has lost signal.

Brent is still checking for tracks of perhaps the Nkahuma lions or Leopard tracks.

Back right away to Stefan who continues with the Woodlouse.
It is a mommy Woodlouse and has babies.

Mommy Woodlouse Has Babies

We also notice on this log wasp pottery jars
the wasp makes these pottery jars out of mud. Then they sting a caterpillar to paralyze it, then put it in the pottery jars where the larvae are and they feed on it.

Over to James who shows us that the rover has a feed from the waterhole but they are having difficulties with the rover doing as it is told.

We also see the new microscope
James wanted to show us a spider but someone moved the jar so we will look at a weevil instead
First pic is it sitting on the table and second pic is under the microscope

Heading back to Brent. He has his thermos to warm himself.

Large Bull Waterbuk

Brent is not going to go any closer to him as it is very windy out which makes the animals nervous.

A viewer asks about the various species of Antelope.
Brent lists them

Brent Very Capably lists the types of Antelopes

Coming  up to Buffleshoek waterhole. Construction is going on bolstering it so it can hold more  water.

Back to James with the microscope

Baboon spider which Stefan thinks died from a wasp sting

Notice the white spots while under the microscope. Those are its eyes

The hairs are nerve sensors which show the spider where to put it's fangs

And here are its fangs

and here is it's abdomen

And over to Stefan to see what he has found for us

Stefan makes a fire from start to finish.

Brent went offline

We are back with James

James has a Burrowing Scorpion

Over to Brent who has fresh Lion tracks. He has been out on a walk

Brent thinks the Lions have been chasing Buffalo.

Back to James

He shows us the surface of a gecko's toes from the microscope

James is going to give the rover a try

oh no! The Rover has gone ROGUE!

with James at the controls

We cut away and we are back to Stefan
Stefan has found a hole under a stump. It has snails and a dung ball in it.

Stefan loses signal and back to James

Baby Crocodile who James says lives in this jar of formulin (preservative)
We see the Crocodiles feet under the microscope

We are now going to look at a Hawk Moth with the microscope

Hawk Moths Mouth

Back to Stefan who once again has signal

Stefan shows us how to tell direction using shadows with a stick in the ground

Stefan shows how to use a stick in the ground to tell directions

Over to Brent  who has spotted some Elephants
But the Elephants have gone away

Over to James

James is testing out the rover again

James playing with the Rover again

We pop back over to Stefan

A Tambouti thicket which makes the best campsites. offers protection from the wind.

The Tambouti excretes a latex  substance which acts like an insect repellent.

Over to Brent and an Elephant

They appear nice and relaxed

Feeding off a Buffalo Thorn which has lots of nutrients
All of the browsing species will be eating a lot of Buffalo Thorn during this dry season

The Elephant really works her trunk to break a branch

Over to James
James looks at the dental hygiene of a Black Backed Jackal who appears to have a cavity

Over to Brent who has found the Hyenas. They are back!

Brent is sure the one has babies inside of the den.

They are born with their eyes closed and are covered with black fur.
While he waits to see if the mom will call the babies out, we hop back over to Stefan

Stefan shows us a female forager.
It is a Trap Jaw Ant.

These ants hunt Termites.

Back over to Brent with the Hyenas

 GUESS WHAT?

We have the VERY FIRST glimpse of a new born Hyena

with Brent Leo Smith

Over to James
James wants to look at a Bat's Teeth
The teeth are visable but not in focus

Great view of the claw that comes out of the wing

Now over to the waterhole where the rover still resides and no animals there because it is quite cold.

Back to Brent with the Hyenas.

The Female is being very protective of the opening into that area of the den.
She has gone deeper into the den

Back to James

Jame's is still playing with the microscope.
This time showing us the underside of a Termite

Termite legs have no bones. It uses Hydraulic pressure to provide the leg with stiffness.

James now puts a feather into the microscope.

You can really see the filaments

Back over with Brent as he has left the Hyena Den and is driving.
Brent explains that a lot of the animals like zebra etc. are keeping in the thick bush because of the wind.

Back with James
James is going to draw us a picture with his coloured pens

James is outlining the Low Feld and high Feld up into the Mountains

James Draws A Map Of The Low and High Felds

James says goodbye for this Sunrise Safari
Over to Brent
Who had an Ellie Bull but it didn't want to be out in the wind.

Brent reminding everyone there will not be a Sunset Safari as they are in rehearsal during this time period.
The next Sunrise Safari will be live at its usual time.

And that concludes our Sunrise Safari.
